SEI Alumni Highlight - Jason Kechijian

Jason Kechijian is one of SEI's stand out alumni and certificate program graduates.  We caught up with Jason recently to see how he is doing in his solar career and ask him a few questions about how SEI helped him attain his goals.

How did SEI help you prepare for your career?

Jason: After finishing a multi-family construction project right before the market collapsed and the development bubble burst, I knew that a career in construction was my destiny. Knowing that the previous successes were unlikely I wanted to position myself for a bright future. I woke up in the middle of one night in 2007 and wrote down on a piece of paper, solar. My journey into the solar industry began.

I set out to learn as much as I could, living in South Carolina there was not much in the way of solar, let alone knowledge. I attended my first solar class at the NC Solar Center with one of SEI's instructors, David DelVecchio, passed the NABCEP entry level exam, but wanted to know more, so then went to Hawaii for SEI's PV202 class in November 2009 and again had David and Kris Sutton as instructors, what a great experience. The level of attention and enthusiasm that both of them gave towards solar was unparallelled and truly made me want to learn and learn and learn everything I could and become a self-professed, "SOLAR GEEK," as Kris Sutton would say.

So then I took some time and worked towards my NABCEP certification, getting my hands dirty, and doing every aspect of what it takes to successfully complete a solar project from sales to bending conduit to AutoCAD to Project Management. I wanted to know how to do every job, so that I could show and teach somebody how to do a task versus telling them how, a principle instilled in me by my father and his leadership.

If someone was considering where to get their solar training - what would you say to them about SEI?

Jason: In my mind, it comes down to 6 main points I would share with anyone who asked me where to get their solar training:

1. Dedication to the students and the industry.
2. The teachers rock.
3.  SEI's world class PV Lab facility in Paonia, Colorado
4. Who wrote the 1st mass produced text book? Who has been doing it the longest?   Solar Energy International!
5. The dedication.
6. The relationships that continue today with the SEI staff.

What projects are you working on currently or have completed in the past few years where your SEI training helped you?

Jason: We currently have around 6 MW in our pipeline with about 2 MW due by the end of the year. SolBright's main focus is working with the DoD and government prime's.  I am working on my PMP certification and Master's in Science in Project Management and I am really interested in learning more about 1000V applications.  My pet personal project is a website, www.solardesigntemps.com , please check it out.

Thank you Jason for your time and we wish you the best of luck in your solar career!
