SEI was honored to host a group of 15 participants from the Kuwait Ministry of Water & Electricity for a symposium entitled The Path to Leadership in Renewable Energy. Kris Sutton and Paul Gibb led the group through a 5 day workshop based out of the Vail Cascade Resort in beautiful Vail CO.

The group started with a full day classroom session with Kris on technical issues for utility scale pv systems. The following day saw the group make the two hour journey to SEI’s world headquarters in Paonia for a hands-on session in our lab facility. The day was topped off with a u-pick session at Delicious Orchards’ peach grove and an amazing dinner at the Fresh n Wyld Farmhouse – a day that several participants described as “unforgettable.”

Classroom sessions on energy management for large buildings and the Middle East solar market highlighted the third day of activities. Many thanks to Mike Ogburn of Clean Energy Economy for the Region (“CLEER”) and Browning Rockwell of the Saudi Arabia Solar Industry Association (SASIA) for their strong presentations. Day 4 was Road Trip Day as the group toured the 900 kW pv array at the Garfield County Airport, led by Isaac Ellis of the installing contractor Sunsense Solar, and then spent an incredible two hours at the Rocky Mountain Institute in Aspen touring and visiting with Dr. Amory Lovins.

The symposium wrapped up back at the Vail Cascade on day 5 with a final classroom session focused on next steps for developing the solar market in Kuwait. Kuwait faces numerous challenges and opportunities as it looks forward to diversifying its fossil fuel based economy. SEI is proud to be helping the State of Kuwait move forward on this journey.
