PV203 PREP: Solar Training – Battery-based PV System Fundamentals – Online

The goal of this course is to provide a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts necessary to work with battery-based PV systems, including the purpose, applications, and design criteria for different types of charge controllers, batteries, and battery-based inverters.  Students will learn to perform application-based load analysis, how to configure battery banks to meet energy requirements, how to safely work with batteries, and how grounding terminology, disconnects and overcurrent protection apply to battery-based PV systems.

This online course covers fundamental principals of battery-based solar PV installation and design, as addressed in NABCEP’s Entry Level Exam Learning Objectives and PV Installer Job Task Analysis. This course has been designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of battery-based PV systems required to take PV301L: Solar Electric Lab Week (Battery-based), PVOL303, PVOL304 (Advanced Battery-Based PV Systems Design Series I & II), and the NABCEP Entry Level Exam.

Students who complete the PV203 PREP Course will be able to perform the following:
• Describe the configuration of different types of battery based PV systems: PV direct, stand–alone, and multi-mode
• Diagram battery banks in series and parallel configurations and calculate values for current, voltage, power, and energy
• Perform load estimate calculations
• Identify the appropriate inverter for small stand-alone systems, residential applications, and multi-mode systems
• Identify the pros/cons of common types of battery technologies
• Determine the state of charge of a battery
• List safety precautions and equipment required to work with batteries, as well as the procedures for commisioning battery-based systems
• List the features, options, and metering available on charge controllers
• Describe how maximum power point tracking and voltage step-down affect a system
• Describe the differences when sizing battery-based systems compared to grid-direct systems
• Choose a peak sun hour value based on design criteria
• Describe why and when to use breakers or fuses for overcurrent protection
• Label a 3-line diagram with grounding and disconnect terminology
• Define the maximum voltage drop allowed for the proper functioning of a battery-based PV system

Prerequisites: Before participating in the PV203 PREP course, students are required to complete PV101 or PVOL101, an equivalent course from another organization, or demonstrate field experience and pass a placement quiz. Please contact sei@solarenergy.org if you feel you are qualified to skip the prerequisite for PV203 PREP.
