| Health Care in Haiti - PV Powered |
SEI PV instructor Carol Weis recently went to Haiti on a joint project with Sun Energy Power International (SunEPI), the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) and Partners in Health (PIH). With support from manufacturers and donor agencies the organizations worked together to provide a 10 kW solar powered hospital system for PIH in Haiti, at Boucancarre in the Central Plains area.
The project included a hands-on training in proper installation practices for solar electric and inverter/battery systems. The 21 Haitian trainees were comprised both of technicians maintaining the electrical systems at health facilities throughout Haiti, and employees from two of the premier Haitian renewable energy companies. |
| DOE Awards Solar Training Grant to Rocky Mountain Region |
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced $87 million in funding to support solar energy technologies and training across the country. Among the groups eligible to receive funding to further develop the nation’s solar workforce is the Rocky Mountain Solar Training Consortium (RMSTC).
Solar Energy International, Salt Lake Community College and Utah Solar Energy Association comprise the RMSTC, which was selected for negotiations leading to a potential $3.1 million grant. The consortium is dedicated to fostering the development of renewable energy through education and technical assistance in the Rocky Mountain region. Twelve states are currently covered in the Rocky Mountain region, the largest geographic region in the United States.
The Rocky Mountain Solar Training Consortium will train trainers and offer professional development activities at community and technical colleges that are developing and improving existing solar photovoltaics (PV) and solar heating and cooling installation courses. RMSTC’s training will implement train-the-trainer courses in-person and via the Internet, based on SEI's nationally recognized PV and solar heating and cooling curriculum.

| Solar In the Schools Gives Thanks |
2009 has been a great year for Solar In the Schools (SIS) and we have a lot to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. We’ve recorded our highest ever number of student contacts (over 2000 and counting!), hired a new full-time coordinator and fine-tuned the curriculum for our teacher training workshops.
In 2010 we will continue to bring our energy into the classroom so that students and educators use their energy wisely. A big thank you to everyone who has helped the SIS program this year:
The Thrift Shop - Aspen,
Town of Carbondale,
Pitkin County,
City of Glenwood Springs,
ABC Foundation, Rotary International, DMEA, Alpine Bank, Xcel Energy. |
| Donate to Honor the Earth and Win LED Lights |
SEI is helping our partner Honor the Earth raise money for the amazing work they do. HTE is a Native-led organization founded by Winona LaDuke to create awareness and support for Native environmental issues.
A donation of at least $50 to HTE's programs (which include solar and wind energy for Native American reservations) will enter you into a drawing to win a 12 volt LED lighting system from Our Sun Solar. This simple and beautiful system contains a solar module, controller, battery and bamboo light fixtures. Click here to donate. Your name gets put into the drawing for each $50 donation you make. Donations must be received by December 15.
If you win the drawing you can also make a tax-deductible donation of the lighting system (a $300 value) back to SEI to be used for a project in a rural area of the developing world. |

The bilateral relationship between the United States and China has begun to take on a more pragmatic and secure quality under the Obama Administration. Cooperation on clean energy development has laid a foundation that presages unprecedented opportunities for Sino-U.S. cooperation.
President Obama’s meetings with the Chinese leadership this week give further impetus to the significant efforts by the two countries to forge a new energy future based on Shuang Ying the Chinese term for “win-win.”
