Upcoming SEI Workshops
If you don't want to travel this winter, but still want to learn about renewables, check out SEI's upcoming online workshops:

And if you would like to travel and learn about appropriate technologies head to Chiapas, Mexico with SEI:

COP15 Summit in Copenhagen
SEI alum Alison Brown is part of a group of seven US young professionals, ages 22 - 33, currently attending the COP15 Summit in Copenhagen. They hail from states all over the nation, and work in Germany’s renewable energy sector. They note that "This is arguably one of the most important international meetings of our generation. We, as renewable energy advocates from a wealthy nation, are obligated to pressure our leaders towards tangible, implementable results." Check out their blog at

SEI Executive Director Johnny Weiss is also attending the summit, and meeting with people from all over the world. He even befriended a polar bear, as seen in the photo above.

SEI's Outreach Program 2009 Successes
Thanks to our members and supporters SEI's Outreach Programs had far-reaching effects in 2009. In our Solar In the Schools Program we taught over 2000 schoolchildren about renewable energy technologies. Through our Native American program we trained youth from different tribes throughout Nevada about renewable energy, and donated a 2 kW PV system to Winona LaDuke of Honor the Earth. Through our INVEST program we sent people to volunteer in projects in Costa Rica, Thailand, Nicaragua, and Haiti. Our Outreach program also donated a 1 kW solar electric system to a rural school in Nicaragua.

More From Copenhagen: Renewable Energy Gets Boost as Climate Talks Stall
In the midst of a turbulent week of demonstrations outside the Climate summit in Copenhagen, in which the police released teargas and arrested hundreds of people, the U.S. announced new initiatives and legislation that will give renewable energy a significant boost at home and in developing countries.

Last week, representatives from developing countries walked out of negotiations, but returned this week after the U.S., European Union and other country representatives came up with a plan to accelerate the development of renewable energy in poor countries, particularly in India and in the Americas.

Support Renewables in the Clean Energy Leadership Act
Physicians for Social Responsibility and a large coalition of environmental, public health and renewable energy organizations are working together to influence the U.S. Senate American Clean Energy Leadership Act of 2009.

The coalition is asking the US Senate to make sure that subsidies for new energy technology in the final congressional climate change legislation will prioritize real, deployable, renewable technologies like wind, solar, and biomass instead of prioritizing larger, more environmentally risky projects like "clean coal" and nuclear energy. The final legislation will have a significant effect on the future of our "new energy economy" and on the solar industry in particular.

PSR is asking people to write to their Senators to let them know we need to keep the focus on real renewable technology, like solar, that will bring jobs and prosperity to the US and stop the potential disproportionate funding for the same tired energy suppliers like "clean" coal and nuclear.

To download a sample letter you can send to your Senator click here.
