Solar in the Schools

SEI's Solar In the Schools (SIS) program focuses on the creation, implementation, and dissemination of renewable energy curriculum. The SIS program goals are three-fold: the proliferation of youth-geared renewable energy education in Colorado and beyond through presentations and curriculum development, the installation of renewable energy technology in the schools themselves, and the eventual realization of a multi day accredited renewable energy education workshop for teachers. SIS emphasizes critical thinking skills by exploring energy choices, conducting scientific experiments, raising awareness, and promoting creative solutions to today's energy issues.

In spring of 2004, SEI presented its renewable energy curriculum to over 600 students in 15 different classrooms around Colorado, culminating with an installation of a one kilowatt photovoltaic system on the Basalt Middle School. The 2004-2005 school year is already proving to be even more successful as teachers all around the state and country are contacting SEI to find out more and request our presence in their classrooms. The SIS program is also partnering with EarthSeeds, an organization in Colorado Springs dedicated to environmental education around the world, by enhancing their earth conscious curriculum with renewable energy education.
