SEI Newsletter Issue 24 - December 2004

SEI 2005 Workshop Catalog

For those of you on our postal mailing list, you should be receiving our 2005 workhop catalog in the mail soon. Due to a printing error, the catalog opens backwards. Being environmentally conscious, we decided to go ahead and send them out, instead of reprinting all 20,000 (even though they're on recycled paper it would still be energy and resource wasteful).

We also thought that in these backwards times (voting fraud, loss of certain rights, reversal of environnmental regulations) that our backwards catalog would fit right in! So sorry for the inconvenience but bear with us, and feel free to read about our workshops on our website at www.solarenergy.org, which is not in reverse.

Take a Workshop in Paradise!

SEI has some workshops coming up in beautiful exotic places. Learn about renewable energy technologies in Hawaii or Costa Rica!

Also, check our website for PV Design & Installation workshops this coming Spring in Arizona, New York, Texas, and Utah.

A New Solar Sister!

Congratulations to SEI instructor Justine Sanchez and husband Mike Pende who have a new baby girl born on Thanksgiving. Ruby Leela Pende was born at 7:19 am weighing 7 lbs. and 19 inches long. Justine will be taking some time off from SEI to be a new mother, but we're all sure that Ruby will be installing solar modules before she hits grade school!

Solar Ovens for South Africa

In September a dedication ceremony to launch the first solar powered bakery in the Eastern Cape was held near Willowvale, South Africa. This project is a joint effort of The Women's Advice Centre and SUN OVENS International, and was partially funded by an Innovation Award from the World Bank. The dedication was hosted by His Majesty King Xolilizwe Sigcawu and Queen Nondwe and was attended by number of dignitaries including former president Nelson Mandela.

The solar powered Bakery will bake bread and generate income for HIV positive women. Female (HIV positive) entrepreneurs will be trained in business management skills and solar bakery management techniques.

Solar Fun in Las Vegas

SEI would like to thank Energy Outfitters for their second annual RE Dealer/Installer Tech Expo. SEI was lucky enough to participate in this forum where RE professionals networked with each other, we saw next year's latest renewable energy technologies, and we gained both new product knowledge and important technical training from manufacturers. We had a great time and we look forward to next year's event!
