Solar School Bus

In 2007, SEI completed the first phase of our Solar School Bus -  SEI’s all-inclusive mobile education station.  Always a hit at schools, fairs, career days and festivals – the Solar School Bus never fails to draw a crowd!

The Solar School Bus began life as a 1986 Chevy Bluebird Diesel Bus. SEI repainted, redecorated, and refitted it to run on either  biodiesel or strait vegetable oil. It has been fitted with a 400 watt solar photovoltaic system to power all electrical needs and acts as a demonstration vehicle to showcase the inner workings of a standalone PV system. There's also a small solar thermal display that teaches the effects of thermal dynamics.

Inside, the bus has been retrofitted to house our displays, while allowing us to travel in style on the couches made of reclaimed lumber. The interior was painted with more environmentally friendly paints, the floors covered with petroleum-free marmoleum flooring, the coverings and curtains made out of sustainable hemp fabric, and we can’t forget about the kickin’ stereo…..

We couldn’t have retrofitted the Solar School Bus without the help of the following sponsors:

Evergreen Solar
Magnum Teknologies
MidNight Solar
Trojan Batteries
Forbo Flooring
Holy Cross Energy
The Aspen Thrift Shop
Xcel Energy
CORE (Community Office for Resource Efficiency)
All of the community members and SEI work traders who spent time to help us finish the bus

It's time for everyone to get on the bus!
