Bring your family and plan to spend some extra time in the area. Download our Carbondale Recreation info packet for information on all the fun things to do in the Roaring Fork Valley. There are many recreational activities in the Carbondale area, and throughout the Valley. Hiking trails, biking trails, fly-fishing, climbing, rafting and kayaking are only some of the outdoor sports that can be enjoyed. Bicycle rentals are available for more adventurous mountain biking. For info on bike rentals call Ajax Sports - (970) 963-0128, or Ute City Cycles - (970) 963-2500. Again, please remember: If you are coming from sea-level please be aware of the higher elevation, and do not attempt any strenuous exercise until you are acclimated. And remember to drink plenty of water.
The town of Aspen is just 30 miles east of Carbondale, where you can find entertainment, shopping and gourmet dining. Redstone, a historic art community, is 18 miles south of Carbondale. And the famous Glenwood Springs Hot Springs pool and Vapor Caves are only 12 miles away. For more information, check out the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce website!
Class Details:
Class will run from approximately 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day of class. Please plan to arrive at the classroom no later than 8:45 on the first day so that the instructors can check you into the class. Lunch will be from approximately 12:00-1:00 pm each day, in addition to a short morning and afternoon break.
- The Solar Hot Water workshop consists of five days of classroom lecture and limited hands-on activities.
- The Successful Solar Business workshop consists of four days of classroom lecture and guest speakers.
- The Building for the Future workshop consists of five days of classroom lecture and tours.
- The Microhydro workshop consists of five days of classroom lecture, tours of amazing systems, and a lab activity.
- The RE for Educators workshop consists of four days of hands-on activities, curriculum lesson planning, and classroom lecture about the basics of renewable energy.
- The RE for Developing World workshop consists of classroom lecture, guest speakers and hands-on labs.

Bus Stations: There is a Greyhound Station at 51171 Highway 6 and 24, Glenwood Springs, CO, which is approximately 13 miles from the classroom. Colorado Mountain Express goes from the Denver International Airport to Carbondale, and SEI students receive a 10% discount. To reserve a seat click here.
Train Stations: There is also an Amtrak Station at 413 7th St, Glenwood Springs, CO, which is approximately 12 miles from the classroom.

Finally, the Roaring Fork Valley is blessed with an excellent public transportation system. There is frequent bus service between Glenwood Springs, Aspen, and Carbondale. See the Roaring Fork Transit Agency’s (RFTA) website (www.rfta.com) for a schedule and fare information or call them at 970-925-8484. SEI is about 5 blocks from the nearest bus stop.
Nearby Lodging: Carbondale offers a wide range of quality lodging options, to meet any budget. Indoor commercial accommodations range from $50 - $165 per night. There is also a hostel in nearby Glenwood Springs. For a list of bed and breakfasts, hotels, cabins, and campgrounds in Carbondale see our accomodations page. In addition, we have a lengthy list of rooms, guest houses, and personal camping options for rent from local folks. If you are interested in sharing space with a local person, then please email Kathy Swartz at kswartz@solarenergy.org and she will send you an electronic copy of this list.
Camping is the most inexpensive option. Campgrounds and RV parks with facilities range from $13 - $20 per night. Carbondale is bordered by National Forest and BLM land - for more information about camping on public land, please call the U.S. Forest Service at (970) 963-2266 or the BLM at (970) 928-2800. Camping on BLM land is limited to seven days and is limited to recreational camping only (not residential). People staying longer than seven days can be ticketed. And if you are camping on Forest Service or BLM land, please bring your own toilet, and dispose of your waste at an approved dump station.
As a note, there is NO camping or housing available at our Carbondale Office.
Food:Downtown Carbondale has a wealth of amazing restaurants, ranging from quick and tasty pizza at Peppinos, to fine dining at Restaurant Six 89, to gourmet Thai (Phat Thai) and Italian (Ella), to amazing breakfast (The Village Smithy), to great pizza and beer (The White House Pizza and The Pour House), cold Margaritas and savory Mexican food (Mi Casita). Weather: The weather in Carbondale in summer should be in the 70s or 80s during the day and then drop into the 50s at night. For a more detailed look at the weather, go to weather.com.
