Happy Halloween from
Solar Energy International (SEI)!
Here is something really scary…. SEI’s Spanish Program Manager, Matt Harris, also known as “El Regulador” pretends he has luscious locks on this Halloween. Check out the Before and After!
Check out SEI’s Chris Turek, Director of Marketing and Alumni Relations – IT IS A SOLAR ZOMBIE #SOLARSELFIE!!!!
SEI wishes you a fun and safe Halloween! Be safe and watch out for the little ones tonight.
Reminder: Get out and vote in the upcoming elections! Not having representation supportive of renewable energy at the local, state, and federal levels of government is even scarier than solar zombies! GO VOTE!!!!
SEI Hosts Delta County 8th Grade
Solar Technology Field Lab

SEI’s Solar In the Schools (SIS) program finished its 2014 season of labs with local 8th grade students participating in an introductory solar technology lab October 21 – 24. A total of 320 students from Delta Middle, Cedaredge Middle, Hotchkiss K-8 and Paonia Jr. High arrived by school bus to explore SEI’s lab facility in groups of 40 for morning and afternoon lab sessions.
Boys and girls from across Delta County, Colorado engaged in four hands-on solar energy labs including lessons and activities in energy efficiency, measuring power, solar orientation and site analysis, testing properties of a photovoltaic cell, and designing a battery-based PV system.

Chilean President Recognizes SEI’s Technical Solar PV Training Efforts in Atacama, Chile

Solar Energy International’s (SEI) Spanish Program has officially concluded it’s most recent training program in Atacama, Chile. Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet, US Ambassador to Chile, Michael Hammer, Ministry of Energy Máximo Pacheco, Senator Isabel Allende, First Solar’s Chief Commercial Officer, Joseph Kishkill, and many other representatives from the private and public sector attended First Solar’s inauguration of what will become Latin America’s largest PV plant to be build in Chile’s Atacama Desert.
An important aspect of First Solar’s initiatives in Chile has been the training of a local workforce in order to prepare young people for what promises to become one of the fastest growing PV markets in the world. Chile has recently approved a net metering law and over 6GW of PV which is now in the permitting process pipeline. Most of this PV capacity is to be built in Atacama.

Just getting started learning about Solar PV?
SEI’s Online Course PVOL101: Solar Electric Design and Installation (Grid-direct) is the perfect place to start.
This SEI online course has launched thousands of careers for solar professionals worldwide. Many of SEI’s 35,000+ Alumni started their professional development with SEI’s PVOL101: Solar Electric Design and Installation (Grid-direct).
PVOL101 Online is also a great place to start for home owners, educators, policy makers, and anyone generally interested in the technical aspects of Solar PV.
SEI Alumni Highlight:
Brandon Williams of Iron Edison

The day after completing the SEI battery lab, I drove to install my first off-grid system in Moab, UT. The customer lives in Montezuma Canyon, which is an ancient Anasazi Indian area. There is no excavation allowed in the Montezuma Canyon, so there are no power lines. There are cliff dwellings and ancient Kiva sites all along the road into the site.
SEI helped grow my business by giving me the tools to properly size and design an off-grid solar energy system. Every class I took helped me to understand more about inverter, solar and battery technology. The instructors had tons of hands on experience that helped me to learn lessons outside of the textbook. The lab was the best part of the entire experience at SEI. Working with the equipment and completing an installation gave me the confidence to go out and do the work in the field.
SEI Engage Magazine Launches at SPI
Our annual publication, SEI Engage Magazine, was launched last week at SPI 2014 in Vegas and helped spread the word about all the amazing things SEI is doing as an organization and the great work our alumni are doing all over the world. Copies are being sent out to SEI members in the coming weeks – watch for it in the mail.
A special thank you to this year’s SEI Engage Magazine sponsor, SMA, for their generous support of this publication and SEI’s non-profit efforts! Visit: http://www.sma-america.com

John Perlin’s New Book: Let It Shine
In this definitive history of solar technology, John Perlin tells a story that goes back more than six thousand years to when the Stone Age Chinese built their homes to make maximum use of the suns energy in winter. The book profiles the fascinating characters who made the solar revolution possible, revealing a group of unknown pioneers, like Gustav Vorherr, who opened up the first school of solar architecture in the 1820s, as well as solar advocates known for other accomplishments, such as Socrates, who 2,500 years ago gave a detailed discourse on designing passive solar homes.
“The 6000 year evolution of the practical uses of solar energy wow
talk about the ‘big picture’! John’s readable book is meticulously researched and documents solar power through the ages. Clearly, it is especially relevant today. Let It Shine’s historical perspective illuminates the way to our sustainable future. It engages, educates and empowers. Read it for affirmation and inspiration. I did!”
