9th Annual Instructor Training Week
SEI held the 9th Annual Instructor Training Week in March and was a well attended and highly successful event. Instructors from all over the country converged in Paonia, Colorado – location of SEI’s headquarters and training facility. New technologies, highly technical solar PV troubleshooting topics, and safety training was all part of this event and a great opportunity for the greatest minds in the solar industry to come together and learn from each other.
The event even got the attention of the local TV News affiliates who sent news crews to cover the event and talk about the growth of jobs in the solar industry.

For the past year we have been reporting that our instructors have over 400 years of combined experience in the solar industry. After an official internal review this month, it was revealed that number is actually over 550 years of solar industry experience within our team of instructors and curriculum developers!

SEI Programa Hispano Alumnus Reaches for the Stars (well actually the Planet Mars)

Edgar Soley, SEI alumnus from Costa Rica, received his training with SEI through our Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) training program in partnership with the U.S. State Department in 2013.
The location where we held the lab classes for the ECPA training program is also where Edgar installed this system that is helping the world reach for the stars – the Planet Mars specifically!
Solar is playing an important role in one of the most important technological developments in the history of space travel. Sibo Energy installed a 77 kW project; that will aid in the development of the plasma propulsion engine, the technology that could allow a manned flight to travel to Mars in just 39 days, instead of 6 to 10 months.
If youd like to know more about the plasma propulsion engine, here are two great links.

SEI Alumni Highlight: Mauricio Ortuondo
The global solar industry is a small world! SEI’s Programa Hispano Team is 8,000 miles away from our Colorado headquarters this week, training 150 Chileans in Copiapo, Chile. During the last workshop, SEI alumnus, Mauricio Ortuondo, walks in the door, wearing a very worn and dirty SEI hat (pictured in red)! We first met Mauricio during a PV201L workshop in 2011 in Paonia, CO.
Five years later, Mauricio now owns Prosolar, a solar company in Santiago, Chile. He is currently working on a big hospital system in Copiapó, Chile and took the time to visit the class and observe as they installed two small PV systems. At the end of the day, he spoke to the class about the opportunities in Chile’s solar workforce, and how SEI provided him the knowledge and drive to start his own business. Mauricio told Spanish Program manager Matthew Harris that he owes everything to SEI and sends a big hello to SEI Team Members – Chris (Smitty) Smith, Joe Villacci, Kris Sutton and Johnny Weiss.
