The pursuit of independence ultimately led Jay to the field of renewable energy. Coming from a career as a mountain guide and educator, it only felt right to understand power away from the grid in remote places. A workshop with Solar Energy International (SEI laid the foundation, and eventually he founded Nunatak Alternative Energy Solutions based in the Elk Mountains of Colorado. Specializing in remote off-grid system installation and design, the mountain environment taught him innumerable lessons in dealing with power systems in harsh environments. The challenge and creative problem solving involved in design, implementation and logistics of installing and maintaining these systems has made a passion out of his curiosity. In 2008 things came full circle when SEI asked him to join the instructional team. In the years since having the privilege to teach with SEI and continue to run an installation business complimented his diverse interests. At SEI whether in the classroom or lab yard his goal has always been to make learning fun, pertinent and accessible to any audience. By creating custom classes and refining and developing curriculum, the opportunity to learn and interact with students from all around the world has propelled Jay to be innovative and forward thinking when dealing with Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) and consultation.
It’s hard to believe this solarcoaster has been going for 25 years. Jay has found himself working from Antarctica, Alaska, Hawaii, to Guam, Oman and beyond. From small remote antenna sites to large scale solar farms, the lessons are numerous, and the experience invaluable. After the sale of Nunatak, Jay has continued to consult, design, repair, install and educate throughout the world under the umbrella of his new company Outpost Renewable Energy Concepts.
