Solar Energy International (SEI) and Independent Electrical Contractors Rocky Mountain (IECRM) have established a pre-apprenticeship plus agreement that creates a direct pathway from SEI’s solar training into IECRM’s four-year Electricians Apprenticeship Program.

The partnership is, in part, a response to Colorado Senate Bill 165, which requires licensure for solar installation work, ensuring the state’s renewable energy workforce meets professional credentialing standards.

Career Exploration Before Full Commitment
Pre-apprenticeship programs allow students to explore the electrical trades before committing to a four-year apprenticeship. SEI students can gain foundational electrical knowledge and hands-on experience that helps them determine if the work aligns with their career goals. This approach increases apprenticeship completion rates and supports long-term career success.

How Credit Transfer Works
IECRM recognizes up to 144 contact hours of SEI training toward the first year of their apprenticeship program. Students who complete qualifying SEI courses and pass an IEC verification exam can transfer their training in blocks of 72 or 144 hours.

Most students will transfer 72 hours, which satisfies one full semester of first-year IECRM classroom requirements. Students with extensive electrical training and completing over 144 hours of SEI courses may qualify for full first-year IECRM credit. IECRM will review each candidate’s SEI training and electrical / construction trades work experience to determine the transferability of both classroom hours and work experience.

A Clear Path Forward to a Growing Field
Colorado and Wyoming students completing SEI’s introductory and NEC code-specific solar courses now have a recognized pathway toward becoming licensed electricians with specialized solar expertise. With electrician employment projected to grow 9% through 2034, the field offers strong career prospects at a median wage of $62,350 per year.
