Paonia, CO, March 28, 2022 – Solar Energy International (SEI) is proud to announce our non-profit’s selection as members of Code-Making Panel 13 of the National Electrical Code (NEC®), which covers Article 706 “Energy Storage Systems” along with several other Articles germane to battery and storage applications. SEI Instructor Karo Fernandez has joined CMP-13 as the Principal, with noted PV and storage expert Jason Fisher also representing SEI as her Alternate.

And for two cycles (2020 and 2023) SEI has been represented on Code-Making Panel 4, which covers Article 690 “Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems, along with several other key Articles, by SEI instructor Rebekah Hren (Principal) and SEI curriculum developer and instructor Brian Mehalic (Alternate).

This is a tremendous honor and responsibility: SEI’s ongoing participation in this process gives a voice to our instructors, students, and alumni currently working in the industry. SEI’s years of experience and dedication to the solar and storage industries will complement the viewpoints and strong representation already provided by manufacturers, trade industries, labor organizations, utilities, and AHJs.

“It’s really important to have a clear understanding of the language in the code. A lot of people can tell you WHAT it says, but we have the opportunity to tell you WHY it says what it does…what went on into making those decisions; some of those words are so important that they can really have a big influence on how people interpret things”, SEI’s Curriculum Developer and Instructor Brian Mehalic commented about his experience participating on the Panel.

Most of the work for the 2023 edition of the NEC® has already been completed; the second draft is available for viewing at NFPA.org, and the final version should be released later this fall.  Believe it or not, soon after that work will begin on the next cycle!
