The Inspecting Solar Heating Systems in New York State program is a series of solar water heating courses supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

The first and primary course in the series is called “Inspecting Solar Heating Systems in New York State” and is offered both as a full day in-person course and as an online course administered through SEI’s online campus. This course is approved by the Department of State, Division of Building Standards and Codes for six (6) CEU’s. An additional three (3) CEU’s will be offered in a complementary course (SHOL203) for participants who are interested in viewing a sample solar heating system and identifying codes, standards and common code violations.

Course Description:

Course participants will review and discuss the latest code requirements and industry standards for solar water heating (SWH) systems. Content of the course will include an overview of SWH systems; industry certifications and standards for design and installation; local code requirements related to SWH systems; and procedures for inspecting SWH installations.

Thanks to NYSERDA, the cost of this course is limited to $50.00 per participant. This registration fee covers the full day of in-person training (including lunch), course materials, CEU submission, and technical support after the training.

Training for Inspectors and Building Officials

NYSERDA believes that the permitting and inspection procedures outlined in the Program are an important part of ensuring quality system installations. In addition, by providing training resources to inspection and building officials regarding typical system designs and best installation practices, solar water heating system installations will deliver the intended reduction in electricity consumption in homes and businesses.

Who Can Participate?

Currently, the in-person sessions of Inspecting Solar Heating Systems in New York State are open to New York code officials and inspectors only. Architects, planners, engineers, and solar installers are invited to join NYS code officials for the online sessions (This course counts towards NABCEP Solar Heating Installer Certification Exam, or 6 ‘JTA’ or ‘Appropriate Code’ hours towards NABCEP solar heating recertification.)

Course Instructor:

Vaughan Woodruff is owner of Insource Renewables, a solar design/build and consulting firm in Pittsfield, ME. A trained engineer and educator, Vaughan serves diverse roles in the solar heating industry. He is a NABCEP-Certified Solar Heating Installer, serves on committees for NABCEP, IAPMO, and IREC, and was the former lead solar thermal instructor for the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic regions of the Department of Energy’s Solar Instructor Training Network. Vaughan is the co-author of the NABCEP Solar Heating Installer Resource Guide, author of NYSERDA’s Field Inspection Guidelines for Solar Heating Systems, and has been published in Home Power and SolarPro magazines. In addition to his work with SEI, Vaughan provides training for a variety of schools and organizations.
