SEI Co-Founder Johnny Weiss Marches on Washington D.C – There is NO Plan-et B!
With protest signs in hand, SEI Co-Founder Johnny Weiss was part of the 200,000+ people who converged on Washington D.C. and assembled all over the country yesterday to have their voices heard during the People's Climate March. Johnny was BURNING UP HOT – BUT STAYED COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE as it was 90 degrees in the shade!
If you were not able to make it to Washington D.C. or take part in a local event in your community, Johnny was there for you in spirit. With that said, it is incumbent upon all of us to rise up and make our voices heard on this topic. There is no better way to arm yourself in this fight than getting educated. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

Give the Gift of Renewable Energy Education
It was also Johnny Weiss's birthday this past Friday! Let's all give him the best birthday gift ever by making a donation to the Johnny Weiss Scholarship Fund.
Even after officially retiring from SEI, Johnny continues to live his passion of a world powered by renewable energy by working in Africa, with Native Americans, and on projects that are close to his heart. Help us celebrate Johnny on his birthday by contributing to the Johnny Weiss Scholarship Fund specifically for Native Americans and people from the developing world.
We are exited to announce that our FV101 training in Costa Rica has been a HUGE success this week!
If you want to enroll in our next training event in Costa Rica, sign up today for our next FV101 class starting July 24 "Diseño e Instalación de Sistemas Fotovoltaicos Conectados a la Red" and get the early-bird discount.
Did you know that 98% of Costa Rica's energy last year was powered by renewable energy sources. SEI is proud to provide industry-leading technical training and expertise in solar energy to help develop the Costa Rican clean energy workforce and to empower their community to continue with this clean energy path. These efforts are inspiring the whole region and continues to spread!
SEI joined forces with Colegio de Ingenieros y Electricistas, Mecánicos e Industriales de Costa Rica (CIEMI), y el Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y Arquitectos de Costa Rica (CFIA) to provide our world class solar energy technical training on the CIEMI campus in San José, Costa Rica.
Recently we had a chance to sit down for an interview with Andrew Sprauer, SEI's new Social Coordinator, who will be a great resource for our students when they are here this hands-on lab season. Andrew is super excited to show our students all of the great things to do while here in Paonia, Colorado. We asked Andrew to tell us a little more about himself and his solar journey.
"I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and joined the Marine Corps out of high school. I served from 2005 to 2009. During that time I deployed to Iraq in 2007 and Afghanistan in 2008.
Following my service, I earned a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Elmhurst College. I moved to Chicago and started working. It was going well for a little while, but I was finding myself feeling unsatisfied with what I was doing. There was something that was lacking in my life; a purpose that was bigger than myself. I wanted to be involved in something that was going to help other people, specifically those who were less fortunate than me."
SEI Student Highlight: Dayne
Strengthening Community Through Solar
Dayne came to Solar Energy International (SEI) with his eyes toward the future: his future career, a more prosperous future for his community, and a sustainable future for his wife and son. Dayne traveled from Lapwai, ID where he works at the Nez Perce National Historic Park and is a member of the Nez Perce Tribe. He sees solar as a way to support the people and organizations he cares about.
On his first day in class, Dayne shared that, in part, he wants to use his solar training to ensure his son would never have to worry about utility bills. He’s hoping to integrate solar electric and solar thermal systems into his home, along with an orchard, so his son will be provided for into the future.
SEI is Teaching Alaskans How to
Stay Current with Currents
SEI leads solar training classes at Mat-Su College in Alaska to help tame outrageous power costs in rural areas! Three solar electric classes offered through Mat-Su College are giving about 20 Alaskans a chance to sharpen their skills and knowledge on solar energy concepts, installation and other aspects of ways to utilize the sun's energy.
Mark Masteller, assistant professor of sustainable energy at the college, said he has set up three classes in conjunction with Solar Energy International (SEI). The goal is to teach individuals the basics of solar panel installation from running wires, to electric grid hookup to energy storage components.
Early indications for 2017 are showing that our hands-on labs for this year are going to fill to capacity as they are already filling fast. Each of our PVOL101 online courses launched in the last few months filled to 100% capacity and many of those students are enrolled for hands-on labs.
So it goes without saying, if you plan on attending our industry recognized training in Paonia, Colorado this year – YOU SHOULD ENROLL NOW!

Solar Holler and Coalfields Development Continues Efforts in WV Coal County
SEI is proud to have worked with Solar Holler and Coalfields Development in West Virginia during the past year. In partnership with these organizations, SEI provided technical training in renewable energy to a new group of young men and women!
SEI's Executive Director, Kathryn Swartz, says of the collaboration "West Virginia has the potential to be a model for the country of how to successfully transition from fossil fuels extraction to renewable energy production. There are so many communities that are experiencing the decline of coal mining jobs due to the glut of natural gas production and climate change.
By combining each community’s greatest resource — it’s PEOPLE — with the entrepreneurial spirit of companies like Solar Holler, we have the ability to create real change and good paying jobs. Solar Holler and Coalfields Development are creating a solar market, and thus jobs. I’m proud to be part of Solar Energy International’s efforts to train their workforce."
