SEI Co-Founder Johnny Weiss Marches on Washington D.C – There is NO Plan-et B!
JW-Bday

With protest signs in hand, SEI Co-Founder Johnny Weiss was part of the 200,000+ people who converged on Washington D.C. and assembled all over the country yesterday to have their voices heard during the People's Climate March. Johnny was BURNING UP HOT – BUT STAYED COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE as it was 90 degrees in the shade!

Plan BIf you were not able to make it to Washington D.C. or take part in a local event in your community, Johnny was there for you in spirit. With that said, it is incumbent upon all of us to rise up and make our voices heard on this topic. There is no better way to arm yourself in this fight than getting educated.

Give the Gift of Renewable Energy Education
It was also Johnny Weiss's birthday this past Friday! Let's all give him the best birthday gift ever by making a donation to the Johnny Weiss Scholarship Fund.

Even after officially retiring from SEI, Johnny continues to live his passion of a world powered by renewable energy by working in Africa, with Native Americans, and on projects that are close to his heart. Help us celebrate Johnny on his birthday by contributing to the Johnny Weiss Scholarship Fund specifically for Native Americans and people from the developing world.

SEI Team Member Highlight: Andrew Sprauer

Andrew

Recently we had a chance to sit down for an interview with Andrew Sprauer, SEI's new Social Coordinator, who will be a great resource for our students when they are here this hands-on lab season. Andrew is super excited to show our students all of the great things to do while here in Paonia, Colorado. We asked Andrew to tell us a little more about himself and his solar journey.

"I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and joined the Marine Corps out of high school. I served from 2005 to 2009. During that time I deployed to Iraq in 2007 and Afghanistan in 2008.

Following my service, I earned a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Elmhurst College. I moved to Chicago and started working. It was going well for a little while, but I was finding myself feeling unsatisfied with what I was doing. There was something that was lacking in my life; a purpose that was bigger than myself. I wanted to be involved in something that was going to help other people, specifically those who were less fortunate than me."

SEI Student Highlight: Dayne
Strengthening Community Through Solar

Dayne

Dayne came to Solar Energy International (SEI) with his eyes toward the future: his future career, a more prosperous future for his community, and a sustainable future for his wife and son. Dayne traveled from Lapwai, ID where he works at the Nez Perce National Historic Park and is a member of the Nez Perce Tribe. He sees solar as a way to support the people and organizations he cares about.

On his first day in class, Dayne shared that, in part, he wants to use his solar training to ensure his son would never have to worry about utility bills. He’s hoping to integrate solar electric and solar thermal systems into his home, along with an orchard, so his son will be provided for into the future.

Solar Holler and Coalfields Development Continues Efforts in WV Coal County
Solar

SEI is proud to have worked with Solar Holler and Coalfields Development in West Virginia during the past year. In partnership with these organizations, SEI provided technical training in renewable energy to a new group of young men and women!

SEI's Executive Director, Kathryn Swartz, says of the collaboration "West Virginia has the potential to be a model for the country of how to successfully transition from fossil fuels extraction to renewable energy production. There are so many communities that are experiencing the decline of coal mining jobs due to the glut of natural gas production and climate change.

By combining each community’s greatest resource — it’s PEOPLE — with the entrepreneurial spirit of companies like Solar Holler, we have the ability to create real change and good paying jobs. Solar Holler and Coalfields Development are creating a solar market, and thus jobs. I’m proud to be part of Solar Energy International’s efforts to train their workforce."
