SEI Alumni are Making a Global Impact

Bilal Ahmed

We would like to share an inspiring story about Bilal Ahmed, SEI alum (years ’10, ’11, ’15). Bilal first came to us when he was a practicing physician in Bismarck, ND. However, his real passion is setting up solar PV powered wells in drought-stricken areas of Pakistan and powering small village schools.

Our team met him in person last March at the Solar Middle East Conference and he was so grateful for all the knowledge that he learned during his seven courses he took with us. We would like to share with you his Facebook page documenting the work that he’s doing. Check it out: https://www.facebook.com/stellargenesys

When we think about the impact that our alumni are having across the world, it gives us all goosebumps. Though we’re not in Pakistan setting up wells or powering schools, our alumni are. And they are doing this work everywhere in the world. With our 55,000+ alumni, we are getting closer everyday to a world powered by renewable energy. Keep up the great work!

SEI Instructor Empowers Students

Karo

Solar Energy International (SEI) has worked since its inception in 1991 to empower people with training in renewable energy. Entering the industry in a country where solar was just getting off the ground, SEI Instructor Karo Fernandez understands the power of passing on knowledge in solar, and the endless opportunity that comes along with access to a new industry.

“SEI has completely changed my perspective on what collaborating means,” Karo said. “It has given me the power to take what I’ve spent years learning and give that to students in just one week.” Growing up in Costa Rica, Karo explained that there was not yet a major presence of solar technology or training in the country. A young trail-blazer, she created her own path into the industry. She discovered PV (photovoltaics) when she was 15 years old, in a magazine. “I read about how people were harnessing energy from the sun,” She recalled. “As a young Latina in Costa Rica, solar was not a thing, I had never seen a solar panel in my life, but after reading this article I was hooked.”

SEI Travels to Alaska for Battery-based Solar Training for U.S. Forest Service

Forrest Service Training

What a great training event with the U.S. Forest Service! The students and SEI Instructor, Jay Pozner, tackled questions and challenges of deploying solar PV systems in remote locations.

"Jay dove in with obvious experience and knowledge. The class learned a lot about battery management, the workings of charge controllers and general sizing of battery-based solar PV systems. We also discussed things like troubleshooting and general power hook up configurations to our systems, i.e. breakers, fuses wiring etc. Those were my goals and we met them. Jay was great and the class identified with him and he took the bull by the horns." – Thomas Hall, Supervisor Electronics Technician, U.S. Forrest Service
