Solar Energy International (SEI) and Red Cloud Renewable Launch Tribal Train the Trainer Program
SEI is proud to once again join hands with Red Cloud Renewable Energy Center (RCR), bringing advanced solar PV expertise, with an accessible technical curriculum that puts power into the hands of learners.
SEI is proud to once again join hands with Red Cloud Renewable Energy Center (RCR), bringing advanced solar PV expertise, with an accessible technical curriculum that puts power into the hands of learners. Our ‘Train the Trainer’ model creates a new web of skillful solar trainers, equipped to initiate solar teaching and related projects in their own communities.
Collaboratively, with generous support from All Points North Foundation, the project will provide in-depth training, equipment, curriculum, and mentored co-teaching to a cohort of Native Americans selected from across the Great Plains tribes. Learning will take place both at SEI’s Colorado campus, as well as Red Cloud Renewable Energy Center. Participants will also have the opportunity to sit for NABCEP certification, and expand their skills and opportunity networks. In the words of Henry Red Cloud, RCR Manager, “additional hands-on training is needed for these solar warriors to understand and implement the technical aspects of solar electric within their communities as they increase adoption and scale of solar PV.”
RCR is one of the first 100% Native American owned-and-operated renewable companies in the nation. It is located on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Their campus includes the Sacred Earth Lodge, which welcomes visitors, and provides ongoing learning related to green building, food sovereignty, and much needed solar furnaces.
SEI supports EWB solar project to improve water system in orphanage and boarding school Wema Centre in Kenya
Karo Fernandez, SEI Curriculum Developer and Technical Instructor, traveled to the Wema Children’s Centre in Bukembe, Kenya volunteering for Engineers Without Borders Chicagoland Professional Chapter to support improvement efforts for the electrical and water pumping systems. This included solar site assessment and power calculations to shift the existing electrical water pump, currently not operating due to grid failure, to a solar powered system. Additionally, she assessed the site and performed a detailed load analysis with Jorge Marquez, another volunteer, for other potential solar energy back-up systems.
Solar Energy International (SEI), in support of their mission, donated equipment for Karo to take advantage of the opportunity to teach children and young adults about solar energy.
SEI donated a “small charge controller lab” which included a PV module, a SunSaver-10 charge controller, an AGM battery, and several 12 V DC light bulbs.

Meet the SEI Professional Services Team!
Over 550 Years of Combined Experience
The SEI Professional Services (SEIPS) Team is a huge resource for SEI Students and Alumni to assist in solar projects that require a higher level of technical assistance and expertise. From feasibility studies to engineering services, SEIPS is here to serve you! As an SEI Student or Alumni, you receive discounted service rates and we look forward to hearing about your project.
In a recent survey of our team it was calculated that we have over 550 years of combined experience that spans almost every area in the solar industry. Imagine being able to have access to that level of knowledge with your next project or client. Click on the photo to the right and go through the bios of our growing team of solar professionals. Many of them may look familiar as most of the SEIPS team are also instructors for SEI.
SEI Launches FREE Online Ground-Mounted Solar Installation Safety Training!
This FREE online Ground-Mounted Solar Installation Safety Training will be available starting in May 2019. You can pre-register now using the link below to submit your student contact information, and then we will contact you when the course is ready to begin.
SEI offered two courses in Oman led by SEI Instructors Kris Sutton and Kyra Holt and in partnership with Shams Global Solutions in April. PV101 and the brand new PV207: PVsyst and Helioscope for PV System Production Modeling course.
Pictured: PV101 students took a break from the classroom to participate in mini-labs to demonstrate what they’d learned; wiring modules in series and parallel and then testing current, voltage, module cell temperature and irradiance. They later took a tour of the PV system installed at the Oman Botanic Garden as one of the completed systems they visit as part of the course.
Thank you for helping SEI celebrate Earth Day! Here are some of the amazing #SEICelebratesEarthDay stories you shared:
“4 years ago I began my career in solar energy with GridAlternatives, where I also had the chance to train with SEI on photovoltaic systems; my day to day consist in installing off grid pv systems in remote communities and teaching them the importance of the use of clean energy on their homes. Along with my University career, SEI has been one of my main educators in solar energy. And this is how SEI trains many professionals in different countries. Let’s take care of the earth and share our knowledge. It’s time to take action!” – Karelia Tercero Ubau
“SEI’s training in Paonia, Colorado created an unforgettable experience and memory! Daily class presentations were tag-teamed by several solar experts before heading to the outdoor lab that provided hands-on, small group training. Sharing my solar knowledge gives me the opportunity to celebrate Earth Day every day!” – Darla Staub Pennington
Congratulations to our April Solar Professionals Certificate Program (SPCP) graduates!
