SEI's Kristen O'Brien Awarded the Colorado Governor's Service Award
for Outstanding Americorps VISTA
Kristen

Congratulations to SEI's Kristen O'Brien for receiving the Colorado Governor's Service Award for Outstanding Americorps VISTA for her work in developing and implementing the Solarize North Fork Valley program. Her efforts resulted in over $400,000 in private investment in locally owned PV systems, 3 new jobs, and over 125kW of PV. A huge step forward for our small community of Paonia and just the beginning of a much bigger initiative.

It’s never too late to start over.

After serving honorably in the U.S. Army for almost five years, Sergeant Rozie Amenya was in search of a new career path. And at the age of 36, her timing was perfect as the Solar Ready Vets program was just starting up.

Amenya’s new plan and career focus is renewable energy. She, along with 23 other transitioning service members and veterans, recently completed the Solar Ready Vets program at the Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado. They make up the second Fort Carson cohort in the Sunshot Initiative’s training program– the first to include female graduates.

SEI Alumnus – Jeff Spies – Proudly Announces the First “Solar Pioneer Party”

By Jeff Spies – SEI Alumnus and Sr Director Policy, Quick Mount PV
I first worked in the solar industry in the early 1980’s selling solar water heating systems as a part time job in college, but following graduation I launched my career into the field of industrial automation. While I enjoyed some aspects of my work, after 20 years I realized I lacked the passion for factory automation and decided to shift my energies back into the small but growing solar industry. My first step was signing up for the full conference pass to Solar Power 2006 (now called “Solar Power International”) and quickly learned that the BEST solar training was available through Solar Energy International (SEI). I signed up immediately for their Beginning and Advanced PV classes, and what a smart move. My first PV class was in Tucson taught by my good friend and off grid guru- Ed Eaton and my advanced class was taught by Kris Sutton and Jay Peltz, both legends in the industry. I truly believe my decision to get training through SEI was one of the most important keys to my early success in solar.

Since I have been in the industry, it has grown quickly and solar trade shows have lost that family reunion feel. I really missed being around these wonderful people from those early years and I swore I would try to get these folks back together again for a reunion party. After five years of talking and planning, I finally organized the first ever Solar Pioneers Party in October in Humboldt County, the capital of off grid America.

solar_pioneers 2

100-200 people are expected to attend including many of the early solar PV pioneers, AEE Solar alumni, and top solar pros from around the country. We will congregate near the site of the original AEE Solar for three days of fun, solar, music, and friendship. This will be the first major gathering of these early PV trailblazers in many years, and if it goes well, we might even make this an annual event.

SEI's recent Women's Solar Electric Lab Week was a great success! With female-only instructors and participants, this hands-on course offers women a uniquely supportive learning environment to build their solar knowledge foundation. This course offers the same curriculum as SEI’s co-ed PV201L, but is intended to further encourage participants to get ALL those solar questions answered and offer networking opportunities with each other and existing women in the solar industry. Make sure to check out the rest of this year's hands-on lab schedule!
