SEI Launches Solar Ready Colorado
to Offer Re-Training for Targeted Populations
Through a new initiative titled Solar Ready Colorado, SEI is recruiting Colorado based students from many different sectors including coal miners, people working in the oil and gas extraction sectors, electricians and other construction trades professionals, and military veterans.
All of these populations are a good fit to explore careers in solar and can apply their highly sought after transferable skills in the solar industry. SEI has over 25 years of service to Colorado’s renewable energy efforts and looks forward to leveraging our industry recognized training program and curriculum to ensure Colorado is Solar Ready for years to come!
Solar Ready Colorado is a statewide effort through Solar Energy International (SEI) and industry partners to expand the activities of outreach, recruiting, and training to the rapidly growing Colorado solar industry and jobs market. Through industry partnerships and support from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, the program provides a dedicated outreach and recruitment effort as well as technical training through Solar Energy International’s (SEI) long running, non-profit 501(c)(3) technical training program to those interested in entering the Colorado solar industry.

David Merritt – A Short Solar Biography
My first drive to Paonia, Colorado to attend classes at Solar Energy International (SEI) began near the Denver International Airport on I-70 West. I had departed Raleigh Durham International in North Carolina a few hours earlier, and I was excited and just a little nervous about my decision to invest in a solar education two time zones away from home.
By the time I had turned south on Colorado 82 and picked up 133 at Carbondale, the State of Colorado had once again embraced my soul with its beauty. Arriving, I parked at the Farmhouse on Pitkin Mesa that would be my home for two weeks and was astounded by the view of Mount Lamborn from the front porch. Even if my study skills were lacking, I knew I would find peace and contentment in and around Paonia.
Due to the high volume of students seeking training from SEI this year, we have added more sessions to meet this demand. If you plan on attending any of SEI’s solar training events this fall – ENROLL NOW! Class seats are going fast for our highly attended hands-on labs, classroom courses, and online courses.
SEI Alumni Highlight: Ben Graves
Science Teacher at Delta High School
Solar in the Schools:
A 21st Century Education for the Next Generation
The final weeks of summer brought students as well as teachers to Solar Energy International’s (SEI) campus. Ben Graves, a science teacher at Delta High School (about 30 miles from SEI), came to SEI for PV 201L: Solar Electric Lab Week (Grid Direct). Ben joined the hands-on lab week as part of the partnership with the Delta County School District for SEI’s Solar in the Schools program. Ben teaches Environmental Science at both a freshman and Advanced Placement level. As part of the Solar in the School’s High School Career and Technical Pathway Program, Ben teaches the high school adaptation of SEI’s PV 101 class. In the PV 101 class, students utilize SEI’s textbook, online curriculum and come to SEI’s lab facility in Paonia for hands-on training.
As for Ben,“I’m at SEI to get more hands-on experience working with solar energy, installing panels, racking modules, and working with inverters to help inform the classes I teach, both at a freshman level and my senior level solar electricity class. In that class the students actually get certification from SEI as introductory PV installers and we’re really working to make that class more hands on and work more for the students who take it.“
SEI Selected as Training Partner for
Middle East Solar PV Conferences
Solar Energy International (SEI) has been selected as the training provider for three international conferences in the Middle East region. SEI has been invited by the conference organizers from the respective events to execute trainings on topics ranging from introductions to grid-tied and battery based systems to advanced PV system operation and maintenance workshops.
These custom workshops are developed utilizing SEI’s peer-reviewed curriculum. The content is developed by our in-house PV Curriculum team of solar professionals. The organization has been providing renewable energy training for the past 25 years and has trained over 45,000 people from around the world. Since their founding in 1991, they have trained over 1,000 people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with an increasing presence at conferences and and contract trainings in the area.
Ed Marston, President of the SEI Board of Directors, recently published an article for High Country News about the local rural electric coop, Delta Montrose Electric Association, and it’s battle with Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association. Though this battle is happening here in SEI’s home state of Colorado, this battle has far reaching implications across the US.
Solar Industry Companies Select SEI
for Training and Continuing Education
These training partnerships bring SEI’s industry leading solar energy technical training to the employees of these solar manufacturers and installation companies, including a full range of training opportunities from introductory to Photovoltaics (PV) topics to Advanced PV Multimode and Microgrid design.
