SEI Professional Services (SEIPS) Team Highlight: Kelly Larson

SEI Professional Services (SEIPS) has a unique and valuable business model in that we employ many of SEI’s instructors and curriculum developers to perform technical work for our clients.  Leveraging SEI’s vast network of instructors and subject matter experts across the entire spectrum of solar PV technologies and applications gives our business model a unique edge as compared to other service providers in this space.

One great example of this model is through the work Kelly Larson, SEI Instructor, does for SEIPS. SEI is the FIRST to offer PV-specific safety training

Until now, no safety training specific to the solar industry existed. You could take a construction safety class, but those classes didn’t focus on the everyday hazards of installing PV systems. Now there’s an opportunity for entire companies- not just installers, but project managers, designers, everyone.. to take an engaging class at a great price and even earn 12 NABCEP CEUs.

Alumni Highlight: SEI Alum Edwin Bifelt founds solar company, celebrates major installation and local job creation

Solar energy training can have a life-changing impact on your career path. Solar Energy International (SEI) Alum Edwin Bifelt first took SEI training online in November of 2017. Not even a full year later, he founded a solar company and just celebrated completing the first phase of a 120 kW solar PV ground mount array project on October 26th in Hughes, Alaska.

Edwin explained that his journey with solar began one night in September 2017. He thought, “Wouldn’t it be awesome to get into solar?” And a late night of researching solar and photovoltaics training led him to SEI’s online campus, and the plethora of training opportunities we offer from grid-tied basics, to battery-based design, installation and maintenance.

Tech Tips: Civil Engineering for Solar – Storm Water Permitting

One of the most common requirements for utility-scale solar farms is the need to control runoff during rainfall events, and sometimes after construction activities.  Permitting requirements generally start at the top with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and specifically the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, or NPDES.  In most cases the NPDES is administered by each state through an agency such as the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for whatever state your project is in.  The name of the agency may be different than having the acronym DEQ in it, so you may have to do some research.

Educate. Engage. Empower. It’s only possible with YOU!

Solar Energy International’s tagline is Educate. Engage. Empower.  In 2017, the solar industry employed 260,000 people.  Rapid growth of the industry, and an unprecedented push for solar installations has generated enough U.S. solar to power 11 million homes, with total capacity expected to double over the next 5 years!  The push towards renewables means that worker training in the design, installation, and maintenance of renewable energy systems is highly sought.  Over 65,000 people have received our technical training, and as we advance collaborations in Latin America, the Middle East, and North Africa–we’re putting our Educate.  Engage. Empower. zeal on hyperdrive.

SEI recently partnered with Green Power EMC to provide training to 10 employees of the Georgia-based not-for-profit. The cooperative was founded in 2001 to support EMCs in their search for Georgia renewable resources. Green Power EMC sources, evaluates and sells power purchase agreements for renewable energy on behalf of Georgia’s EMCs.

Senior SEI instructors, Rebekah Hren, Kelly Larson and Bill Hoffer traveled to Georgia to teach a custom Operations Maintenance and Troubleshooting course for the organization.  The hands-on course was a continuation and culmination of a 20-hour online course administered by SEI instructors in the previous months.
