Paonia, Colo., November 2, 2020 – Solar Island Energy and Solar Energy International (SEI) are thrilled to announce their first round of recipients for the Caribbean Solar Energy Training Network Scholarship:
Sapphire Vital is joining the SEI student body from Commonwealth of Dominica with an incredible diversity of renewable energy, policy, and climate mitigation experience. She earned a BS in Civil with Environmental Engineering from the University of the West Indies, and a MS in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford. She sees this training opportunity with SEI as an ideal chance to gain the practical skills needed to launch her own business or initiative, as well as fulfill her desire to contribute to renewable energy advancement in the Caribbean region.
Ivor Greenaway is a dedicated, emerging professional in the renewable energy industry, joining the SEI student body from Montserrat. He earned a diploma in Electrical Engineering from University of Technology, Jamaica, with a specific interest in electronics and telecommunications. He’s excited to enter the PV design and installation field for its extensive personal and financial opportunity, all while supporting the clean energy development of his home island.
Kengie Lockhart, a passionate and aspiring electrical engineer, is joining SEI the student body from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She earned a NVQ certification and degree in Electrical Engineering (as one of only two women in her country’s history), which she hopes to continue to a Master’s. She sees SEI’s training opportunity as a powerful tool for both fossil field reduction and gender equality in the engineering field.
Continuing into 2021, CaribSETNet will award 10 to 20 partial or full tuition scholarships in solar training to selected applicants to advance their professional development and support their entry into the Caribbean solar-energy workforce. Recognizing that the Caribbean is one of the most demanding environments to deploy solar energy and microgrid systems, CaribSETNet aims to create consistency in key safety and technical solar skills from sales to engineering to construction practices; elevating the playing field for energy practitioners while bridging the gap between the supply and demand for solar jobs. SEI’s accessible solar energy training seeks to address the racial, gendered, economic, and employment obstacles ingrained in the engineering and energy fields, while simultaneously aiding climate mitigation by building a diverse, empowered, and environmentally-focused global solar workforce.
Those looking to apply for scholarship funding must live in the Bahamas or OECS, though SEI is looking forward to geographically expanding in the future. Applicants must be passionate about solar energy and excited to jumpstart their education and career into this important, emerging field.
