SEI prepares students to empower developing countries with renewable energy applications in updated RDOL101

Whether you are a renewable energy professional with a vision of improving lives through clean energy in developing countries, or a Peace Corps volunteer about to embark upon international field work, Solar Energy International (SEI)’s RDOL101: Appropriate Technology for the Developing World is a great place to begin.

This course takes a look at appropriate technologies (practical solutions that are both affordable and accessible) to address many of the United Nations’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals to transform our world.  Rather than focusing on one technology, the course provides an overview of options so that you, the project developer or field worker, can work with a community to brainstorm solutions to meet their specific needs. Included are clean technologies to address water, sanitation and hygiene, food processing and cooking, lighting and rural electrification, biomass, and shelter.

Thank you Solar Pro and Home Power!

SEI threw a great THANK YOU party for Home Power and Solar Pro Magazines at our booth this evening! It has been a great partnership for many years having SEI instructors and curriculum developers write some of the very best technical articles for those two magazines.

Unfortunately, the time has come for those two publications to end a great run. With that said, the work they have produced will live on for decades in the careers and lives of the solar professionals and home owners all over the world inspired by their great magazine content.

Even though this chapter may be over for HP and SP – we are excited to see what is next for their team. Every single one of them have a shared passion and vision of a world powered by renewable energy. So where ever you are in the world this evening we invite you to raise your glass and toast Joe Schwartz and the HP / SP team as a thank you for the years of service they have provided to the solar industry!

SEI’s Solar Forward Program Manager Mary Marshall featured on the Clean Power Planet podcast

“Mary Marshall studied journalism in college and then jumped right into a career in television news, working on NBC’s Dateline and Nightly News with Lester Holt. But she became disillusioned and wanted to do something more meaningful. So she took a walk to clear her head. Actually she hiked 500 miles of the Appalachian trail by herself. When she got off the trail she signed up for AmeriCorps and discovered Solar Energy International (SEI).

Mary’s AmeriCorps VISTA project at SEI involved community outreach efforts in Delta County, Colorado where SEI is located. The goal was to bring jobs and clean energy to small towns in the county that were suffering from recent coal mine closures.

After her AmeriCorps project she stayed on at SEI and is currently developing Solar Forward, a program with the goal of growing solar in rural communities across Colorado. I had the chance to talk with Mary in person at the American Solar Energy Society’s Solar 2018 Conference in Boulder.”

Solar Forward: The importance of empowering community groups to “be the change” they want to see in their energy future

Solar Forward is on a mission to bring Solar Energy International (SEI)’s industry-leading solar expertise to communities throughout Colorado looking to kickstart solar markets. We are so excited to see solar growth efforts are ramping up in Gunnison County. As the school year gets underway, our program partners are starting their planning process for a Solarize program which is slated to reach the entire County.

The Solar Forward program empowers community groups to implement solar growth initiatives in the regions in which they are located. In the case of Gunnison County, two graduate students at Western State Colorado University are overseeing and implementing a Solarize program as their capstone project, with SEI’s Solar Forward Technical Adviser as their mentor.

Welcome to the SEI Team! SEI welcomes new staff:

Saphire Stockman: Student Services Advisor

Saphire first came to Costa Rica in 2011 through study abroad, and then made the move back to Costa Rica in 2012 after graduating a proud Jayhawk, and throughout the years has worked with individuals and groups of students during their studies in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Peru, Nicaragua and the United States. She is excited about bringing this passion to SEI as a Student Services Counselor, to ensure that students get the most from the courses and experience they are pursuing.

Deirdre Morrison: Development Associate

Deirdre Morrison joins SEI to help build relationships and strategy for grant funds and development.  She enjoys a generalist approach to skill-building, and has diverse community oriented background that enables her to connect to lots of different people.  She built a tiny house, introducing herself to PV systems, and then taught women about using power tools and basic construction.  Her Celtic name was chosen by her mother after reading a poem, and though the consonants and vowels look a little confused, it is pronounced like dear-dra.
